Pulau Perhentian ( Perhentian Island)

PerHentian Island

The Perhentian Islands are two islands named Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island) andPulau Perhentian Besar (Large Perhentian Island). The Malay name Perhentian is translated as “place to stop” and this is exactly what these two islands were for traders travelling between Malaysia and Bangkok in years gone by. These islands are still a gorgeous place to stop and rest today, albeit for tourists disconnecting from the stress and routine of everyday life and not for weary seafaring traders. Pulau Perhentian consists of 2 main islands which are located about 25km away from the town of Kuala Besut. The smaller island is known as Perhentian Kecil and bigger one is called Perhentian Besar. If you are not familiar with Bahasa Malaysia, "Kecil" means small and "Besar" means big. Unlike the bigger and more developed islands of Pangkor or Langkawi , these 2 islands are still seeing a slower pace of development where there are no roads or airport facilities.

Accessibility to the islands and getting from one part of the island to another is by ferry or boat. Electricity is generated by using the local generators located on the island itself. There isn't any 5 Star Resort accommodation on these two islands.
If you are looking for a place to snorkel, scuba diving, swimming or just spending some time away from the routine of everyday life, these beautiful islands are worth considering visiting. Due to the North-Easterly Monsoon season, most resorts are opened only from February to October. The best months to go are between June to August.
The island status as part of Pulau Redang National Marine Park means that most of the marine life are still intact until today. You will have to pay a token sum of RM5/adult and RM2.50/child as conservation fees to enter the islands. Take note that fishing, littering, collecting of corals or polluting the environment are strictly prohibited here.

Snorkelling & Scuba Diving At Pulau Perhentian

Snorkelling and scuba diving are the two most popular activities that you can do here. You can rent snorkelling equipments such as mask, snorkel and fins from the resorts nearby for a fee of about RM30 per set/day. The crystal clear sea water will enable you to see the marine life with visibility up to 40m in a clear and calm day. Enjoy looking at the turtles, sharks, colourful fishes and hundreds of other marine life as you snorkel on the various locations of the islands.

 Perhentian Kecil Island
The Kampung Pasir Hantu village is located on this island where you will be able to see some wooden houses, a school, a clinic, a mosque and a police station.
The Pasir Panjang beach which is located at the east of the island is one of the better beaches around here. You will be able to see long stretch of white sandy beach and crystal-clear water. As this is the main beach around, there are many activities here.
The resorts located here are cheaper compared to Perhentian Besar, hence this is the place to stay if you are in your youth or tight on budget. Prices foraccommodation ranges from RM20 to RM200 per night.

Pulau Perhentian Besar
Teluk Pauh at the North West of the island is a beautiful half-moon bay beach. Snorkel here and notice the turtles, sharks and other marine life. After your snorkelling, take a rest at the beautiful stretch of white sandy beach. Shark Point and Tanjung Basi are two other good places to do your snorkelling. Teluk Dalam is located at the South of the island and is a big curved bay with sandy beach. There are casuarinas tree along the beach though most of the corals have been damaged.
Most of the resorts are concentrated on the west coast of the island. As such, taking a boat to a less crowded beach is a good idea if you prefer to spend some private moments on your own.
The resorts on this island is of higher standard than Perhentian Kecil, hence staying here with your family is a better choice. Prices for accommodation ranges from RM50 to RM350 per night.

Best Time To Visit

Shari-La Island Resort (99 rooms) 3 stars rating
Location: Beachfront
Address: Perhantian Island, Terengganu, Malaysia

Shari-La Island Resort is a tropical island idyll on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, one of the Perhentian Islands located 21KM off the North East coast of Peninsula Malaysia.

Shari-La Island Resort is situated on one of the famous beaches on the islands. An above-average resort judging from the price. Location is very strategic, near the beautiful beach of Teluk Aur, which to our guest is the best beach on the island. The chalets are cleverly built between natural vegetation and blends well with the surroundings. There is a good patch of coral garden right in front of the resort.

Development here is still generally low-key with most accommodation consisting of low-rise chalets and bungalows. The island therefore retains much of their original forest cover and within the resort itself it is possible to see monitor lizards, spectacled languor monkeys and flying squirrels.

The surrounding crystal clear waters of the South China Sea are home to an abundance of coral and marine life including green and hawksbill turtles, moray ells, beaches combined with a very relaxed atmosphere make this a mecca for scuba divers, snorkellers and those just wanting somewhere "to get away from it all".

Pulau Redang ( Redang Island)

Pulau Redang ( Redang Island)

Redang Island, locally known as Pulau Redang or just "Redang" is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. It is one of nine islands, which form a marine park, and which offer snorkeling and diving opportunities. Access is from Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats operated by the resorts; there is also a small airport with services operated by Berjaya Air from Singapore(Seletar Airport) and Kuala Lumpur (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport).
The island is also an important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the indiscriminate economic exploitation of turtle eggs had caused fewer turtles returning to nest on the island. This has led the Terengganu state government to set up the Koperasi Setiajaya Pulau Redang in 1989, a cooperative aiming to develop and manage socio-economic programmes that could improve the livelihood of Pulau Redang locals without endangering its natural resources.
The waters around Pulau Redang also contain two historic shipwrecks: HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse. The ships were sunk here at the start of World War II, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya.
The Pulau Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide. Its highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres above sea level. The boundary of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is established by a line linking all points 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) from the shores of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu and Pulau Pinang. The other nearby islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Susu Dara are also gazetted and protected as Marine Parks. Today, only the bigger islands like Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian and Kapas have resort facilities for visitors. The management of Marine Parks primarily involves protection of the sensitive marine and terrestrial ecosystems by controlling the impact from human activities. These include waste & pollution management and conservation of coral reefs and terrestrial habitats.
The 2000 film, Summer Holiday was filmed on the Laguna Redang resort, and a replica of the tea house now serves as the resort's gift shop.

Best time to visit:
Between March and October. Take note that most resorts are closed during the North-east Monsoon, which blows from November to February.

Across the Manjung Straits opposite Lumut is a bustling fishing village on Pulau Pangkor, the largest of nine islands in a small group of islands. The name Pangkor might have originated from the Thai word Pang Ko meaning 'beautiful island'.

However, others believe it might have been named after Pang Kui, a legendary Chinese adventurer said to have lent his skills in seamanship to bands of pirates this island once sheltered.

Pulau Langkawi, Kedah

Off the coast of Kedah is a cluster of 99 islands with the best of many worlds; beautiful beaches, world-class infrastructure, mangroves rich in flora and fauna, ultra-cheap duty-free shopping and fascinating legends.

Langkawi has a lingering legend woven into its history. Ask anyone in Langkawi about the tragic legend of a beautiful young lady named Mahsuri, and you'll hear a tale of love, jealousy and a curse that was placed upon the island by the her for seven generations. Today, the seventh generation of Langkawi’s inhabitants has long come and gone, but people here still believe that the prosperity and blessings the islands enjoy today and the passing of the curse is not a pure coincidence. The mysticism of this legend can be felt in many parts of this island, especially at Makam Mahsuri (Mahsuri’s Mausoleum) where the famous legendary figure is said to be buried.

Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond. You can also visit the Field of Burnt Rice, the Hot Springs, Telaga Tujuh (The Seven Wells) and the Beach of Black Sand. Boat tours are organised to Tasik Dayang Bunting, (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), Gua Cerita (Cave of Stories) and the Gua Langsir (Curtain Cave). And if you're more outdoorsy, why not go trekking through the pristine rainforest that blankets most of Langkawi, or go on a boat tour of the mangroves, go diving, or play a round of golf at some of the 5-star resorts. Langkawi also has an underwater world, containing an underground tunnel that runs though a giant aquarium, that has gotten rave reviews.

Attractions
Datai Bay
Datai Bay is situated at the north-west corner of Langkawi island and has the most exclusive golf resort on the island - the Datai Bay Golf Resort. Another exclusive establishment here is the Datai Langkawi Resort, luxurious, elite and indulgent.

Langkawi Cable Car
On a clear day, you can see parts of Thailand towards the north and Indonesia towards the south-west. The cable car ride up the hill takes about 20 minutes and is highly exhilarating. At the top, there are two stations as well as a viewing bridge that let you take in all of Langkawi. As a bonus, your ride will take you over jungle waterfalls and a thick carpet of virgin rainforest. It's a very educational and thrilling experience for the whole family.

Langkawi Mangroves
Set in a craggy, almost magical setting of limestone outcroppings rising sharply out of the calm Andaman Sea, the mangrove forest here is really an intricate network of streams and hidden coves that are home to hundreds of endemic jungle species of wildlife.

Among the most exciting of these are the Brahminy Kites and huge Sea Eagles who nest in the crags overhead. One of the best ways to discover this usually inaccessible mangrove world is to join the regular small boat tours available. The highlight of any tour to the mangroves is the feeding of the eagles. Your boatman will throw food into the water near your boat and wait for these huge birds to circle overhead and swoop in for their 'lunch'.

Mangrove tours can include jungle trekking, cave exploration, village visits, high tide swims and guided exploration of mangrove flora and fauna. Decide on what itinerary best suits you before you book.

Explore kilometres of tidal forests, rugged limestone cliffs, secluded caves and unique flora. Pure Nature!

Pulau Payar Marine Park

The sprinkling of jade green islands that makes up Pulau Payar lies just 30km south-east of Langkawi. It's just a 1-hour boat ride out to the best marine park on Malaysia's West Coast, making it an ideal choice for a day outing.

This well-preserved, uninhabited marine park extends over a number of islands, with Pulau Payar being the largest. Your base out here is the floating platform moored off Pulau Payar. But the real attraction of this platform lies below sea level. Step into the underwater observation chamber to view the marine life surrounding a reef. Want to get even closer to the swirl of fishes that make these corals their home? Grab a mask, a snorkel and fins and join the spectacle!

Are you into scuba diving? The best diving is along the reef system that skirts the south, east and west of Pulau Payar. Please check with your dive operator what the visibility is like during that time. It can vary from time to time.

There is no accommodation in Pulau Payar as it is a marine park, but that's not really an issue since Langkawi, with all its fine resorts and restaurants, is just a quick boat-ride away.

Tanjung Rhu
At Padang Lalang there's a roundabout with a turn-off to the north to Tanjung Rhu. The beach is lined with whispering casuarinas trees and has a pleasant, relaxed feel. Tanjung Rhu has one of Langkawi's best beaches. The shallow water makes it fine for swimming, and a sandbank links it to a nearby rocky outcrop. The Gua Cerita, or Cave of Legends, is just around a promontory and can be reached by boats that are hired on the beach.

Pantai Pasir Hitam
Some 2 km west of Tanjung Rhu is Pantai Pasir Hitam, a beach streaked with black sand. The black streaks are caused by the deposits of mineral oxides from a nearby spring. The sea in the area is dotted with large boulders. Along the beach is a jetty where fishing boats moor. Attractions include food and souvenir stalls that sell local crafts and trinkets.

Shopping
Oriental Village
Overlooking beautiful Burau Bay in Langkawi, the Oriental Village is one of the region's newest and most unique shopping, cultural and culinary destinations. Specially designed to provide a new concept in resort duty-free shopping, the Oriental Village also houses fine themed restaurants that reflect Asia's culinary delights.

With over 470 brands and 17,000 products, the village offers shopping buffs a huge range of international designer labels and local products. Bold displays of culture and fashion and fascinating handicraft demonstrations by skilled craftsmen add to the excitement of shopping here.

A delightful inn completes the village concept while cultural and theatre performances enhance the oriental theme that defines the village. Indeed, a blend of the traditional and modern intertwined with the local culture provides a unique experience for the visitor. Apart from excellent restaurants, a specially designed food court offers a variety of local fare. The Inn and the Club Bar provide an excellent rest stop for refreshments.

Pekan Rabu
Pekan Rabu (Wednesday Market) is a bazaar, so named because it was usually held on Wednesday. The bazaar is open every day from morning until night and is one of the main attractions for visitors to find all kinds of local farm produce, handicrafts, local delicacies, fruits, and garments.

Craft Complex
Perched on a strategic location near the sea at Teluk Yu, the Craft Cultural Complex was set up to maintain and promote the nation's rich cultural heritage. Beautiful and intricate handmade crafts can be found here, reflecting the skill and creativity that have been handed down through the generations. The Langkawi Craft Cultural Complex sales gallery is a great place to pick up some handmade mementos of your stay in Langkawi.

In 1996, Langkawi Crystal was established on the north-western Malaysian island of Langkawi.
